Demographically, culturally, and politically, Alaska shares many traits with the Mountain West. As such, I see many of the trends cited here displayed in the Alaskan polity. There's a real sense that Democratic politicians can and will succeed in the Big Sky states, so long as they've made it clear they're not going to take away anyone's guns.
Mark Begich, the Democratic nominee in the AK Senate race I'm covering over at http://bearsandballots.blogspot.com/ has a concealed-carry permit, allowing him to carry his handgun on him most of the time. This sort of blend of traditional democratic values with libertarianish views seems to provide blue viability in otherwise red states.
